7 Bamboo Manual KDJ Process

This article describes how the 7 Bamboo Karaoke Lounge runs its karaoke show without automation.

This was merely what was observed by going to the Boo every now and then and watching stuff happen. (Folks in the know, please fix anything that is wrong...)

This is based on what I see on Fri, Sat and Sun. Note this process is pretty much the same, regardless of who the KDJ is. (With and without Toq runnin' the show)

Background

The 7 Bamboo is a venue where one customer performs at a time on a high profile stage, and in front of all patrons. This is as opposed to a venue where customers rent one of several rooms and perform only for the guests invited to their given room.

The KDJ has a means to maintain a "playlist", which is an ordered list of songs to be performed by individual singers. This "playlist" may be computer based, or is managed by lining up paper tickets and using an object such as a 9V battery or a paperweight to mark the current singer.

Process

  • ( 1) Customer buys $1 Paper Ticket From Bar
  • ( 2) Customer fills out ticket with desired song info and name
  • ( 3) Customer gives ticket to KDJ
  • ( 4) KDJ Enters information into the appropriate location in the "Playlist" based on how many times they have sung, what order they previously sang relative others, and other factors.
  • ( 5) Customer may choose to give custom CD to KDJ
  • ( 6) Customer may choose to tip the KDJ
  • ( 7) KDJ may choose to bump the customer higher up the list if it is their first time singing or rotation (See AutoKDJ for Clubs, A primer)
  • ( 8) KDJ may choose to bump customer up the list based on familiarity with customer, or tips, or cuz the singer is hot, or for any other reason they feel like. Similarly, KDJ may choose to bump customer down the list or remove the customer from the list based on customer behavior, or because they left, or for any other reason they feel like.
  • ( 9) Customer may choose to repeat the above steps
  • (10) KDJ announces time to sing
  • (11) Customer gets up and sings
  • (12) Customer may choose to tip KDJ
  • (13) KDJ may choose to give the customer a free ticket for another song
  • (14) Customer goes back to 1 or 2 or goes home
  • (15) KDJ announces "sold out" when the length of the songs on the "playlist" is equal to or greater than the difference between the time the bar closes and the current time. At this point, KDJ no longer accepts tickets.
  • (16) If customers who have songs on the "playlist" decide to leave, KDJ may choose to allow more tickets.

Problems with this process

  • Lot of manual work for the KDJ
  • No good method for customer to purchace "upgrades", other than tipping
  • No way for customer to purchase songs

Notes on automation

When moving to an automated system it is important that we don't change the first two points in the process. This is because that is the way the Boo has been operating for years. A change here would be difficult for the owners to accept. And, it's not really necessary to do so.

These are the points that could be automated: (3), (4), (7), (10), (15), (16)

Point (8) implies that no matter how much automation we do, the KDJ needs to be able to override the automation at any time he wants, and these overrides should stick unconditionally.
